Working together to promote independence

Glasgow Centre for Inclusive Living, Values into Action Scotland and Fair Deal are developing a pilot project to link appropriately trained support workers to train young disabled people on a 1:1 basis to travel independently.  This will involve undertaking a journey to achieve a specific outcome e.g. to meet a friend on a regular basis, travel to a group activity, attend college or work. Our aim is to provide evidence that this should be a recognised need in the Self-directed Support assessment process and should be accommodated, if appropriate, within a personal budget;

We hope that this project will help young disabled people to:

  • increase their confidence in travelling independently
  • create more opportunities to develop interests, maintain friendships, or access education or employment.

We have funding to train up to 12 young people over the next two years. This training is free of charge to the young person who will only be required to meet the cost of their own train/bus tickets. We are delighted that Fair Deal staff agreed to become involved in this project and we look forward to a continuing working relationship.

“The independent travel support has been amazing. It has changed my son so much – it has improved his confidence and  gave him independence”
