Parent and Carer support

an older lady and gent who are carers

Fair Deal recognises the important role that parents and carers play in the lives of individuals who need support. We are fully committed to working alongside you in ensuring the person you care for is safe and well but also has opportunities to have a full and varied life and experience risk.

Taking risks is part of living life and dealing with the consequences of the choices we make reflects the amount of risk we take. At Fair deal we work with people in an individual way to ensure they have appropriate and stimulating challenges in their life to help them flourish and grow.

We recognise this can be challenging for some parents and carers but we will always work with you and reassure you that we have the best interest of the individual at the core of our involvement with them.

Hear From Some Of The Carers Involved In Fair Deal

Margaret Thomson

Face of a Carer at the AGM held for Fair Deal

Margaret was one of the founder members of Fair Deal. She became involved at the outset as she was adamant that her son should be supported to have a full life in the community and not have to move away to a large institution like Lennox Castle which was the usual practice at the time.

She and 6 others challenged the local authority, undertook Open University Courses and campaigned with positive results which saw the Scottish Office at the time award them funding to set up Fair Deal for 1 in 100 (Now Fair Deal). This group's persistence really paid off and Margaret has a wonderful story to tell of how her son despite his difficulties is now married, with his own house locally and is still being supported by Fair Deal.

Her involvement with Fair Deal now is more limited but is frequently seen at social events and AGM's as she continues to support the positive work of the organisation.

Lexie Barrie

The face of a carer attending Fair Deals AGM

Lexie had her own experience of supporting an elderly relative before she became involved with Fair Deal. She is a friend of Margaret above and it was Margaret who encouraged her to get involved. She became involved around 1988.

Lexie fully supports the work of Fair Deal and is particularly inspired by the way they support people to achieve high levels of independence, be responsible for their own lives and have great social opportunities.

She recognises that carers and families get a great degree of relief from knowing the person they love is being well supported and having a full life.

She feels that she gets as much more back from being involved with Fair Deal than she gives and like Margaret the two friends are regular attenders at events to support the ongoing work of Fair Deal.
