Disabled Parking Campaign

Drivers without disabilities who abuse disabled parking bay spaces can actually park in them without being penalised.

The Disabled Persons Parking Places (Scotland) bill will now make parking in disabled bays under council control illegal through a Bill which was introduced by Jackie Baillie a Labour MSP. Jackie joined Fair Deal and others in campaigning for this Bill which has been a central focus for the Transport Working Group for a long time.

She was not in Holyrood when the Bill became law, but she said:

"Disabled people want to be more independent. This Bill removes a major barrier that prevents them from achieving this goal. The abuse of disabled parking bays is a quality-of-life issue. I hope this legislation will act as a deterrent and make it that bit easier for disabled people to go about their day-to-day lives."

The TWG has been involved with the campaign since it started and representatives of the group were in the Scottish Parliament to see the bill finally become law.

The new law will see able-bodied drivers fined £30 for using disabled parking spaces - increasing to £60 if not paid within 14 days.
